When the going gets tough, we sometimes forget to look after ourselves and our mental health. With busy workloads and hectic schedules, we often fail to find time to relax. Whether it’s playing a sport or socializing with our friends, it’s important to try to strike a work/life balance as best you can. Here are five tips for fitting relaxation time into your busy schedule.

Ask for help

For some reason, many of us feel that asking for help in the workplace is a sign of weakness, when in fact, it is a sign of strength and self-awareness. It’s important to remember that you are only human and can only achieve so much in your workday. If you are unsure of how to do something or simply cannot complete the task, speak up! Someone on your team will be happy to help and support you!

Say no!

It’s important that you know your workload to decide whether or not you have too much on your plate to take on extra work. We’re not advising you to decline work requests or to object to your manager’s delegation of tasks. But do speak up and say no if you do not think you will complete the job to the best of your ability within the time frame given.

Plan your day

To ensure you take time out of your day to relax, we would advise you to create a daily structured plan. Introducing daily planning into your routine is an easy – but essential – step to create a perfect work/life balance. Having a daily plan allows you to separate the time you spend working and the time you have for everything else outside of work. This will mean you will then have dedicated time in your diary for relaxation! The dream!

Electronic detox

Remember to give up your smartphone and other digital devices for a certain period every day. You are not genuinely relaxing if you are endlessly browsing social media or checking your work emails after hours! As a first step, you should enable your phone’s ‘do not disturb’ mode after a specific time. The ‘do not disturb’ option on your phone will soon become your new best friend.

Laugh out loud

Did you know that laughing is a stress reliever? So whether it’s watching your favorite comedy or hanging out with a funny friend, you must allow yourself a good laugh on a regular basis. Not only does laughter relieve stress, but it also soothes pain, relieves tension, and even boosts your immune system, according to the Mayo Clinic.
