More Than Half (53%) of Working Parents Seek Financial Stability Through Additional Work Opportunities as Children Go Back to School

Of parents with a full-time job, two-thirds will look for flexible or temporary work to supplement income as the school year begins

AUSTIN, TX – AUGUST 24, 2023 – Financial stability (54%), instant income (49%) and saving for future expenses (43%) are the primary drivers of parents pursuing temporary work opportunities once their children return to school this fall, according to a new survey from Indeed Flex, the digital platform for flexible and temporary workers.1

The average planned back-to-school spending per household in the U.S. has gradually increased year-over-year to reach nearly $900 in 2023.2 Combined with rising education and cost of living expenses3, over two-thirds (60%) of working parents said they will consider an additional flexible work position to supplement their income this year.

“As kids return to school this fall, working parents know that comes with new strains on their finances,” said Stacey Lane, general manager of Indeed Flex U.S. “Rising education cost of living expenses are the reality for many working families across the U.S. To provide the most flexibility with their schedules and to supplement their incomes, many working parents are turning to flexible short- and long-term temporary work options. The Indeed Flex survey found that a variety of industries attract parents seeking flexible work opportunities, including retail (40%), administrative/office support (40%) and hospitality (35%).

Over two-thirds (60%) of working parents surveyed said they have experience in flexible work positions. Among those with experience, a high majority (84%) have used  income from flexible work for various expenses, including educational costs, extracurricular activities, and family vacations.
