Tips for Faster Advancement
  • Get relevant certifications to stand out and qualify for higher-paying roles faster
  • Take on extra responsibilities and volunteer for leadership opportunities
  • Build relationships with managers and express your career goals

Key takeaways

  • See the typical 5-7 year progression for your current role
  • Know what skills + certifications bridge each step
  • Compare external moves to internal step-ups in earning power
  • Plan annual goals around skill gaps, not vague 'leadership' bullets

How it works

Captures current role + industry + years of experience. Returns a 5-7 year path: next role (typically 18-36 months), the role after that, and the typical pay band at each step. Includes the skills + certifications that bridge each step.

When to use it

When planning a year-end raise ask, when shopping for an external move, or when considering a pivot to an adjacent industry (e.g. retail → warehouse → logistics ops).

Where does the career path data come from?

Indeed Flex aggregates LinkedIn + BLS occupational projections + internal Indeed Flex placement data. Paths reflect the median trajectory; faster or slower paths exist depending on certifications, regional demand, and tenure.

What if my current role isn't listed?

Pick the closest match. The path data covers ~300 roles across hospitality, retail, warehouse, logistics, healthcare support, and admin. If your role is genuinely niche, the recommendation typically routes to a parent role (e.g. 'specialty barista' → 'barista').

Are the pay bands accurate for my city?

The default pay bands are national medians; the calculator adjusts for your selected state. For finer city-level adjustments, run the Cost-of-Living calculator alongside.

Does it recommend certifications?

Yes — each step shows the typical certs people pick up to make that jump (ServSafe for food service supervisor, OSHA-10 for warehouse lead, etc.). Cost + time-to-complete shown alongside.

What about lateral moves vs step-ups?

The path shows step-ups (vertical progression with more pay). Lateral moves to higher-paying industries (retail → tech sales) aren't in the default path; toggle 'include industry pivots' to see those branches.

How realistic is the timing (18-36 months per step)?

Median data. With strong performance + targeted skill-building, steps can take 12-18 months. Without intentional development, they stretch to 4-5 years. The calculator's output is your floor + ceiling, not a guarantee.
