Shift & Schedule Tools: Methodology & Data Sources
Our shift and schedule tools calculate worked hours, overtime, and pay using the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and state-specific overtime rules. Results are estimates to help you plan your week, not official payroll or legal advice.
How often we update
FLSA changes are reflected within 30 days; state paid-leave and overtime-rule updates within 7 days. A freshness banner appears on affected tools between an upstream release and our update.
How we calculate worked hours
Hours are computed from clock-in and clock-out times per day, minus unpaid breaks you enter. Daily totals sum to a weekly total shown in both decimal hours and hours:minutes.
How we calculate overtime
By default we apply the federal FLSA rule: 1.5x your regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. For states with daily overtime (e.g. California), we apply the state's daily threshold using Department of Labor and state labor-department rules.
Double time and seventh-consecutive-day rules are applied only where a state requires them; we note the assumption on the tool.
What these tools do not do
These tools estimate hours and pay for planning. They are not a system of record for payroll and do not determine legal entitlements. Confirm with your employer and the Department of Labor for binding figures.
