Pay & Tax Tools: Methodology & Data Sources
Our pay and tax calculators estimate take-home pay using federal IRS withholding methods, state income-tax brackets, and FICA rates. Figures are estimates for general information, not tax advice. We cite every rate and refresh within days of an authoritative release.
How often we update
Federal IRS and SSA releases are reflected within 72 hours; state-level changes within 7 days; BLS annual data within 30 days. A freshness banner appears on affected tools between an upstream release and our update.
How we estimate federal withholding
Federal income-tax withholding follows the percentage method in IRS Publication 15-T for the current tax year. We apply the standard deduction by filing status, then the marginal brackets, to a worker's annualized gross pay.
FICA (Social Security and Medicare) is applied per IRS Publication 15 at the statutory rates, including the Social Security wage base cap published annually by the SSA.
How we handle state income tax
Each state's brackets, flat rate, or no-income-tax status comes from the state's revenue department, cross-checked against the Tax Foundation's annual comparison. States with no income tax return zero state withholding.
Overtime rules (federal weekly vs. state daily thresholds) are sourced from the U.S. Department of Labor and individual state labor departments.
What these tools do not do
These are estimators, not filing tools. They do not account for every credit, local tax, garnishment, or pre-tax benefit. Verify numbers with the IRS, your state agency, or a qualified tax professional before relying on them.
